I’ve started this post many times and each draft has came out with a negative tone surrounding being hired for internships. So, lets try this one more time…
I have applied for nearly 40 positions across all different types of companies in the sport media realm, yet only one job offer. There are times–specifically at night when I can’t sleep–that I question what else I need to be doing to get a summer spot. I’ve critiqued my resume, cover letters, and portfolio a thousand times and tried to put myself out there to gain experience, but when is it enough?
Employers want people with experience, but how else am I supposed to expand my experience if there are limited positions open to me? I found that it’s alright to show employers how badly you want a position. For quite some time when applying for jobs, I would try to remain strictly professional, but there is a healthy balance between formal and passionate.
My life was a whirlwind when looking for internships last summer, so the only option to get into contact with these employers was to cold call them, and that’s exactly what I did. I scoured the company website until I found the contact information of someone I thought MIGHT be able to help me. Sometimes I received an email back and other times nothing at all, but doing just that landed me an amazing starting role with my local news station.
To be honest, writing this article has allowed me to take a break from the job search. I would scroll LinkedIn and Teamwork Online until my eyes fall out of my head because there is always a voice saying “your position is out there, you just haven’t found it yet.” I guess my advice and purpose in writing this today is to remind everyone and myself that everything happens for a reason, especially when it comes to career paths. Keep working and building a name for yourself, and your time will come.
However–if anyone reading this knows of any jobs in media (specifically sports), let a girl know!!! Happy job searching ❤
