“What do you want to do?”…The dreaded question by college students

“The more YOU love your decisions, the less you need others to love them”

As a college freshman, I often ask myself: “what is this even for?” or “can I really do all the things I have dreamed of?”. During the months leading up to high school graduation everyone and their mother are asking what you plan to study, and to be perfectly honest, not many are completely certain. Most…aka myself, ended up telling people I was going to major in Biology and was headed down the Pre-Dental route. In all fairness, I had planned on possibly attending hygienist school, but it was not until I arrived on campus and began classes that I realized I can be successful in a profession where I get to truly do what I love- write, travel, meet interesting people.

We are raised from a young age to have a plan for our lives, and the plan must ensure early success. I know we each have someone or a group of people looking out for us and our futures, but asking the loaded question “what do you want to do?” is so difficult for such a young person to answer. When the questions about my future were rolling in, I was 17 years old…not even old enough to vote, yet people wanted me to tell them what I planned on doing for the rest of my life.

I often times go back to ask myself what I would do with my life if I knew I could not fail, rather than doing what is “practical”. I see myself traveling around the country either interviewing athletes like ESPN Sports Journalist, Holly Rowe or taking photos and writing a moving story on the issues going on in our world that people need to know about. Making a difference is the common factor of all my goals when I look at them from a broader view, and I had to learn the hard way now is as good of a time as any to start! So, always remember that your journey to your future is only yours- nobody else’s…chase your dreams without fear of failing, and you may just catch up to them.

My advice is to be patient. I myself rushed most of my life and missed a lot. Enjoy right now!
